Eventually, along the nacreous layer, isolated insertions of the prismatic layer can be observed in the form of discontinuous bands. Known as mesolayers, these insertions are probably related to momentary interuptions in the production of the nacreous layer, probably owing to a reduction in environmental nutrients.
